How the Vietnam social insurance lump sum is calculated

The social insurance lump sum (bảo hiểm xã hội một lần) lets employees withdraw what they paid into the retirement and survivorship fund after they stop contributing and meet the conditions. This calculator estimates the amount under the current Social Insurance Law.

1. Lump-sum formula

Benefit = Average insured salary × Total multiplier

  • 1.5 months of average salary for each year contributed before 2014.
  • 2.0 months of average salary for each year contributed from 2014 onwards.

2. Rounding odd months

Contribution periods with 1 to 6 odd months count as 0.5 year; 7 to 11 odd months are rounded up to 1 full year.

3. Foreign employees

Foreigners with a work permit and a labor contract of 12 months or more pay compulsory social insurance in Vietnam. When the contract ends or the work permit expires and they leave Vietnamese employment, they can usually claim the lump sum using the same formula. Keep your social insurance book and passport ready.

4. Worked example

Mr. Nam contributed for 5 years and 4 months: 2 years before 2014 and 3 years 4 months from 2014. His average insured salary is 8,000,000 ₫.

  • Before 2014: 2 years × 1.5 = 3.0 months.
  • From 2014: 3.5 years (4 odd months round to 0.5) × 2.0 = 7.0 months.
  • Total multiplier: 10.0 months, so the lump sum is 8,000,000 × 10 = 80,000,000 ₫.

Frequently asked questions

When can I withdraw social insurance as a lump sum in Vietnam?

Under the 2024 Social Insurance Law (from 1 July 2025), people who started contributing before 1 July 2025 can claim the lump sum after 12 months without compulsory or voluntary contributions, provided they have less than 20 years of contributions. People who started on or after 1 July 2025 cannot withdraw just because they stopped working; they can only claim on reaching retirement age with under 15 years, emigrating, serious illness or at least 81% loss of working capacity. Foreign employees can claim when their contract ends or work permit expires without renewal.

Can foreigners claim a social insurance lump sum?

Foreign employees who paid compulsory social insurance can usually claim a lump sum when their labor contract ends or their work permit expires and they do not continue working in Vietnam. The same 1.5 / 2 months per year formula is used.

How are odd months rounded?

Under Circular 59/2015/TT-BLDTBXH, 1 to 6 odd months count as half a year (0.5) and 7 to 11 months count as a full year (1.0).

What documents are needed?

The original social insurance book, the lump-sum request form (Form 14-HSB) and your ID or passport, submitted to the local social insurance office.
