Why remove metadata from images?

1. What is image metadata?

  • EXIF: camera or phone model, date and time, lens and exposure settings.
  • GPS location: the exact coordinates where a photo was taken, which can reveal your home or workplace.
  • XMP: editing history and software information.
  • AI generation data: prompts, seeds and model settings saved by some AI image tools, plus Content Credentials.

2. How it works

When you choose an image, the tool scans the file for common metadata blocks and lists what it found. It then redraws the image on an HTML canvas and exports a brand-new file that contains only pixels. Nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

What metadata can a photo contain?

Photos from phones and cameras usually include EXIF data: device model, date and time, camera settings and often the GPS coordinates where the photo was taken. Edited images may carry XMP data from software such as Photoshop.

Do AI-generated images contain my prompt?

Some do. Stable Diffusion front-ends and ComfyUI save the prompt, seed and settings as text inside PNG files, and some services add Content Credentials (C2PA). Removing metadata keeps your prompts private.

Does this remove invisible watermarks such as SynthID?

No. Pixel-level watermarks like Google SynthID are part of the image itself and are designed to survive cropping, resizing and compression. This tool removes metadata only.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The image is redrawn and exported entirely in your browser, so it never leaves your device.
