How typing speed is measured

1. How WPM works

A standard word is 5 characters including spaces, so word length does not affect your score.

WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

For example, 250 correct characters in one minute is (250 ÷ 5) ÷ 1 = 50 WPM. Accuracy is the share of typed characters that match the text.

3. How to type faster

  1. Home row: rest your index fingers on F and J; the small bumps let you find them without looking.
  2. Don't look down: keep your eyes on the screen to build muscle memory, even if you make more mistakes at first.
  3. Posture: sit straight with elbows at about 90° and relaxed wrists.
  4. Practise daily: ten focused minutes a day beats an hour once a week.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good typing speed?

Around 40 WPM is average for regular computer users. 60 WPM or more with over 95% accuracy is a strong professional level, and above 80 WPM is excellent.

How is WPM calculated?

One "word" is standardised as 5 characters including spaces. WPM = (correctly typed characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes spent typing. If you finish the text early, only the time actually used is counted.

Can I practise typing in Vietnamese?

Yes. Switch the language to Tiếng Việt and type with your usual Vietnamese input method (Telex or VNI). Accented letters must match exactly to count as correct.

Is accuracy more important than speed?

Yes. Every mistake costs time to notice and fix. Build accuracy first, and speed follows naturally.
